Using the coverage page allows you to define where your drivers are allowed to operate, helping you control service zones, improve dispatch accuracy, and organize driver availability more efficiently.
This article walks you through how to create driver coverage zones that your drivers are responsible for covering and operating within.
Important Note
Coverage zones are only enforced when shipments are automatically assigned to drivers using the Routing Engine within the Plans module. In this case, coverage zones act as constraints that guide the routing engine when deciding which driver should handle each shipment.
When shipments are assigned manually, these coverage zones can be overridden. This means that a driver — even if assigned to a specific coverage zone — can still be manually assigned to a shipment whose destination falls outside of their defined coverage zone.
What Has Changed?
Previously, coverage areas were strictly tied to teams, meaning you could only define a coverage at the team level. Now, this limitation no longer exists.
A coverage represents a defined geographical area used to control which drivers can operate and deliver orders within that zone. You can now create a coverage that is handled by a specific driver or a selected group of drivers, based on the operational criteria you define.
A coverage can be assigned to one driver or multiple drivers at the same time, regardless of whether they belong to the same team.
Each coverage is managed by its own designated set of drivers. Additionally, a single coverage can include one or multiple geographical zones, giving you full flexibility in managing driver availability and service areas.
How to Create a Coverage
Follow the steps below to create a coverage:
From your FleetRunnr portal, click on “Fleet” in the dashboard.
From the left-side dashboard, click on “Coverage.”
Click the “Create Coverage” button.
After clicking the button, a new entry will appear in the list below the search bar on the left side of the screen, representing the coverage zone you’re creating.
In the Name field of this entry, enter the name of the coverage zone.
You can define the coverage zone on the map in two different ways:
Draw the coverage manually as a polygon – Use the first tool in the toolbar located at the top-left corner of the map to draw a polygon that represents the coverage area directly on the map.
Search for a location – Use the search bar at the top-left of the map to find and select the area you want to use as your coverage zone. Once selected, the area will appear on the map as a polygon representing the coverage.
As a final step, and after defining the coverage zone(s), click the checkmark icon next to the coverage name in the entry to save your changes.
Editing a Coverage (Before or After Saving)
You can edit a coverage at any time—either immediately after drawing or selecting the zone, or later after it has already been saved.
This allows you to adjust the coverage area as operational needs change, whether you need to refine its boundaries, expand it, or correct an initially selected area.
There are three ways to edit a coverage:
Edit by resizing the coverage polygon – Double-click the coverage directly on the map, then drag any of its edges to expand or shrink the area until it matches your desired zone.
Edit by cutting part of the coverage polygon – Select the coverage on the map, then click the scissors icon in the toolbar at the top-left of the map.
Once selected, draw a polygon over the area you want to remove. The drawn shape represents the portion that will be cut out from the original coverage.
Remove a coverage polygon – If you selected or drew the wrong area, click the corresponding coverage polygon on the map, then select the trash (bin) icon from the toolbar at the top-left of the map.
This will remove the selected polygon, allowing you to redefine the coverage correctly.
Additional Notes
A coverage can be modified both while it’s being created and at any later time to accommodate operational changes.
A single coverage can include multiple zones. You can either draw several areas on the map or select multiple locations using the search bar, all under the same coverage.
Each coverage you create is identified by a letter. The same letter displayed next to the coverage name in the left-side list will also appear on the map inside the corresponding coverage zone.
This makes it easy to visually identify which zone belongs to which coverage—whether the zone was drawn manually on the map or created by searching for a location using the search bar.
